The Reason I listen The Reason

April 18th, 2006 by eeqbalz

You know something, there comes once in awhile, when a new song played on air and immediately it somehow describes your feelings, your mood, and all with all the right basses, trebles, drums and stuff quite perfectly. Although you are not really in love but somehow the song stirs you in that direction or at least makes you feel like you are in love.

Then you began to wonder, why is this song special, why does it reminds you of the something in the past, awakens you to some emotions you really dont care… well when you are dealing with emotions, logic and rationality do not actually have anything to do with it. In fact, emotional response regularly defies logical or rational deductions.

The fact that love has nothing to do with reality of life and has everything to do with those of abstract and enigmatic feeling is quite amazing. In short, one falls in love because one does so. Mmm dont get me wrong here… I’m not walking the mushy mushy road here… just relating to the fact that The Reason by Hoobastank as of now describes me more or less…

Anyway, the reason I love the song so much is because it is The Reason for me to do so… doesnt make much sense huh? So is life but we live it! ‘Nuff said…

"The Reason"

I’m not a perfect person
There’s many things I wish I didn’t do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I’ve found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you

Hoobastankthe_reasontrasera

I’m sorry that I hurt you
It’s something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
Thats why i need you to hear

I’ve found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you (4x)

I’m not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I’ve found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you

I’ve found a reason to show
A side of me you didn’t know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you

Kicked the butt and some more

April 2nd, 2006 by eeqbalz

Huzzah! I finally made up my mind to kick the cigarette butt to oblivion. I’m in the 3rd week of inhaling oxygen without the extra smoky stuff inhaled into my oh-so-tender lungs. However, I still joyfully inhale the other extras modern day life has to offer breathing-wise such as ‘asap lori, kereta, motorsikal’. Hmmm…

Anyway, the tobacco industry has lost one of its victims only to be taken up by others. I’ll say, the RM7.00 price tag does not really put up much a resistance to battered lung owners but do actually make newbies taking up the toxin-inducing hobby think not twice but seven times.

The hard core smokers just say aiyohh mahalnya dan tak adil and yada yada yada… next you’ll see these jokers happily puffing their hard earned cash to literally ash. But I must say apart from getting extra RM7.00 per 2 days, my appetite seems to be on overdrive. That’s why I’m taking up jogging. My taste buds now are very sensitive that I still can taste last week’s tongkat ali coffee… gross!

I’ve been smoking for about 10 years… maybe.. less or more. But smoking for me is something enjoyed over a company of friends or on joyous occassions. The new place I work at is to say the least challenging and smoking only leave my tongue all bitter… yuck! Strange but true… I smoke less when I am alone or down in the dumps but can actually polish off a pack of 20 cig butts in one night.

It all depends on my mood. Now my mood is all grumpy, I finally have the reason to toss the smokey habit into the dustbin. Thank God I am not addicted… really funny but nevertheless helpful for me. I really must congratulate the cigarette industry for mixing a cocktail of poisons and changing them every once in awhile.

Dont lie to me… I knew you guys been doing that. You see, every year, I usually change brands because suddenly the brand I was smoking became terribly bitter or taste awful that makes you wanna puke or even taste like burnt paper to me. I think I changed at least 7-8 brands of cigarette. And I was running out of brands until I changed jobs… great!

But to most people, smoking can and will be addictive so better not take up the nasty habit. Take it from a former smokey… it aint worth it!

KUALA LUMPUR INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR 2006 AT PWTC

March 25th, 2006 by eeqbalz

Hye guys…

I’ve just came back from the KL International Book Fair 2006 at PWTC. It was certainly a hot Saturday afternoon indeed. And for this year, the organisers chose to hold it at Hall 1 & 2 instead of the usual Hall 3. Hence, ardent fans of the fair wouldst see a somewhat illussion of the fair being smaller since it is done on one floor and not 3 floors as before.

By the way, Hall 3 is hosting this Direct Selling Fair just beside the entrace to Hall 2 & 1 so be on your look out if not you just might end up in the wrong fair (nevertheless, the DS Fair’s entrance is free so unless you dont mind being ‘tipah tertipu’, you can also browse around there).

Typically, Hall 2 is your garden variety of books; something you would expect from the general Malaysian public - novels, magazines, and children books. Hall 1 is more specialized with Dawama, ILBS and Pearson Malaysia to name a few fabled publishers , which had set up their booths there.

2 things I would like to comment. First, this year’s fair is a wee bit on the kindie side with pre-school books (and furniture - read playthings!) and school referrence books with the likes of SASBADI and such. Second, the crowd as expected is more heavy in Hall 2 since Karangkraf and the gang is heavily rooted there whilst Hall 1 is more sparsely thronged by gawking peeps.

This is good since serious book worms can actually browse around instead of struggling just to get a breath of air from the mainstream novel-reading crowd. No offence here, but it should be done that way all these years before. You should segmentized and specialized the exhibition to cater for different people.

Of course, a dash of integration is good to get a good mix of exposure of serious geeky and techie reading materials to novels freaks. At least people from the other side of the reading world actually know what the other reading hemisphere is reading. But a disorganized one like the several years back fairs is totally chaotic and to some extent irratating.

Anyway, like I said, the kiddie reading materials’ presence at the fair is felt and I dont know… it could be good or otherwise. Anyway, you can register for a membership with the National Library and Perpustakaan Kuala Lumpur there. Quite convinient…

Anyway, for me, today was more of a recce… to see what the fair has to offer. All in all, I would give the fair, at least to me, a 80% thumbs up. On the minus side is there seem to be more kiddie materials on show… not for me. On the plus side however, the fair has a variety of books on show with segmentized exhibitions.

‘Nuff said…

p/s - I need to get a digital camera… then my postings would be more exciting wouldn’t it? And another thing, don’t go to klcc tomorrow, there will be a demonstration against the government’s decision to raise fuel prices. Peaceful or otherwise, it is ILLEGAL… so stay well away to avoid trouble (this is a LEGAL advice, no politics here OK?).

Yet another journey to memory lane

March 19th, 2006 by eeqbalz

MIRC - revisited

I still can remember the MIRC craze (aka chatting) that really started to shape the 80s generation. It was already there before the craze hit the country especially amongst techies, guru and geeks. Hence, MIRC really was within an elitist circle.

However, as cyber cafe (cc) began to pop up here and there thanks to the falling cost of getting online, (was quite cheap in 1996-97) and not to mention the burst of online / multi-player gaming such as Quake, Doom II and Microsoft’s Age of Empires, curiousity got the better of us and most of us jumped into the ‘chatting’ band wagon.

Yup, it was back then the easiest solution to meet new friends online and also for a lucky (!) few, new love. During those days, there were Yahoo! Messengers and ICQ but while the former is uncommon in Malaysia, the latter is very much elitist.

Compared to YM and ICQ, MIRC offers a sort of plug n play wherein you just fire up MIRC, select one of the 3 reigning kings of Malaysian MIRC servers; Dalnet, Undernet and Webnet (I think), then select the 2 most favourite channels; #mamak and #kampung, and taraa… you’re online! No registration fuss, no password or username hassles (of course you could register your nick in MIRC for yours to keep, but the culture of keeping something for yourself isnt there among newbies).

It was a craze I picked up a little a late but nonetheless it was still quite the trend and norm of those days. Late as in all my friends in my age group had grown out of it. But newbies keep on coming in and you get to meet people very fast and easy. It’s kinda like speed dating of sorts. You try different nicknames or pick-up lines just to get the attention of the person on the other side.

Then the some of the plain vanilla crowd emerged and graduated to advanced mode. They went into scripts (protection, war, bots etc), add-ons and other spiced up skins or programmes that ran on the MIRC client. From RM4.00 per hour, it went down to RM3.50, then to RM3.00 and it settled at RM2.00 per hour until now. It was a price war during those days among the cc owners.

I was lucky to find a cc at Kerinchi (near the LRT Station). With a one time membership registeration costing RM10.00, you get to surf/chat etc there for RM1.50 per hour. The lowest rate even until now. It was during the 3rd Semester of my 1st year, and my friends and I cramped our classes to 3 days only. The rest of the week, we did some community service near Kerinchi, handling youths with issues to say the least.

Anyway, we slept there at the centre, eat there etc. Our work is usually done by 10.30 p.m. and for most of us, it was beddy time. For me, it was the breaking of the dawn for my internet alias ‘tuanwujian’ (gee… my tuanwujian@yahoo.com is almost 9 years old - I registered it with the help of Hasbee in 1997).

I walked there (almost 2 km) and my online sessions usually starts from 11.00 p.m. until the earliest 3.00 a.m. (on weekends it was until 6.00 a.m.). You know, there will always be people anywhere and at anytime. The world is not that lonely after all. Those days were superb. I knew the craze wont last long at least for me. So I went on full steam and got hooked. But it was worth it since I got to know with several persons from various parts of Malaysia whom until now I still call them friends.

Interestingly, one of the 3 servers, Undernet that is, banned Malaysian IP addresses due to spams coming from our country. TMNet tried to reason with them and I cant remember after what happened. Anyway, Malaysians started to flock to Dalnet and Webnet (I cant find this one anymore).

A few days back, I tried to give the old chatting craze a go. Interestingly, not many newbies go for it anymore. I see the old scene of elitist users crowding up most of the channels especially mamak and kampung. You see, MIRC is very easy and simple a communication tool. After a while, people tend to look for something more sophisticated for their comm needs.

During those times, whenever people want to know how you look, usually you send files to them thru the DCC feature I think. Then came face-pic.com. As YM, Msn and ICQ matured, more features were added, it became almost all in one that you really dont need MIRC anymore. It became MIRC = elities, instant messenging = mainstream. And now you even have friendster.com, myspace, and what nots.

Sigh, I couldn’t last 2 hours on MIRC. Heck, I didnt get to chat with people beyond hi and asl anymore. Well, I guess, MIRC is a wrap for me. But thanksh a bunch MIRC for the memories. If not for that chatting craze, I guess would hate computers like I hate water. Nuff said…

Still missing u…

March 18th, 2006 by eeqbalz

It has been 84 days since I left u,
Still I couldnt forget u
Never far away my mind from u
In my heart there is only u

The times we shared together
It will never get better
I feel empty nothing else really matter
Be it present and future; now and later.

Tis is nevertheless fated
Sealed firmly, clear and dated
To leave my current place, I am tempted
Lack the courage is what pitifully lamented

Book Fair Is-A Coming To Town

March 11th, 2006 by eeqbalz

Howdy Folks,
The annual convention for bookworms, geeks, socially-challenged peeps (like me) and the rest of the world who gather at PWTC to see and gawk at the stack full of books, books and books everywhere…
It will be on 24 March until April 2006. So dont missed it. The fair has almost anything anyone could want reading material-wise.
Check-out its website great stuff there!
You have to excuse the somewhat funny looking text. The pc where I’m using seems to ‘meragam’ but then again friendster’s bloggie which is typepad based isnt perfect to start off with.
Anyway, dont forget the fair. I hope to dive into bargains in the old books bin. Of course for ye all novel-loving-puppy-loved-struck individuals / couples, there will be endless selection of such types of novels.
Say hi to me if you see me there! Chow!!!

Eeqbalz Playgroundz Inc Censored???

February 25th, 2006 by eeqbalz

Remember I whined about EPI being rated as adult and consequently blocked by my company’s web admin? Well here’s the snapshot of the error I get whenever I try to open my friendster blog.

Censored_1

It’s pretty hillarious, dumb and embarrassing since I am purportedly running an ‘adult’ blog! Aiyooh… not only I consider myself to be underaged for stuff like that, but take a good look at my blog and you’ll see it is rated a ‘U’. For God’s sake I wont beg the bloody admin to ‘oh please high and mighty web admin, I beg of thee to alloweth my blog to be updated by myself. I beesech thee and thine holy wisdom to grant me my final wish …’

Aargh! What a load of crap! Anyway, it’s not only friendster is down, Yahoo! Messenger is affected. It seems this St. Bernard software is pretty solid a setup. A simple proxy server setup will not deter it of its holy appointed task! Damn! However, rest assured, EPI through its subsidiary Eeqbalz Playgroundz Netechnologies is cracking skulls in finding a way out of this saint what’s-his-name software.

I would have posted the snapshot much earlier but out of the blue, there were no restrictions as to web content and I have thought that the old saint fart has finally dropped dead from body odour. Alas it was a matter of server down or something.

Oh, if you are wondering, I am posting this from somewhere else (a place I still yearn to be at, and it seems it too yearns for me to be there). A simple case of "Di sini ‘aku’ menunggu, di sana ‘kau’ menanti" perhaps? ‘Nuff said!

Lots of du’a and prayers to ye and thine significant other

February 11th, 2006 by eeqbalz

I just got to know about Abg Aboo’s predicament today. His wife is apparently suffering from a slipped disc and as of 8th February is currently warded at Pusrawi.

I’ll say a slipped disc is by now way a joke. Not only it’s quite painful and uncomfortable to say the least but involves a certain amount of risk when the docs operate her. I say no more.

I hope and pray that Allah will help Abg Aboo and his family, his wife especially in their time of need as Allah has provided and helped many a believer in their difficulties. I do recall a ceramah by a certain ustaz on radio regarding the trials of this life.

He said life’s troubles are signs that Allah is very near to you and loves you dearly. This is because when you are sick, in some sort of predicament, unhappy or anything that take away your enjoyment of this life, it will cleanse away all your sins. He purposely commands so in gracious preparation for us to meet Him.

The ‘cleaner’ you are of dastardly deeds and sins, the better is your welcoming come the Day where no amount of money nor offsprings hold any significance. To Abg Aboo, Allah will always be with you as He is never far from His believers. To Kak Liza, insya Allah all will be well soon.

The signs of the times

February 5th, 2006 by eeqbalz

I was pretty much occuppied with stuff, work and all, that I didnt get much time to follow current happenings. Take for example the following news courtesy of The Star :

Utusan closes its Jawi weekly

PETALING JAYA: Utusan Melayu Mingguan, a weekly Jawi newspaper by Kumpulan Utusan, was published for the final time on Jan 28.

The 67-year-old newspaper ceased publication due to declining advertising revenue and operational losses.

Utusan Melayu was first published as a daily in Singapore on May 29, 1939. Utusan Zaman, a Sunday edition, was published a year later.

The newspaper was in the forefront in shaping the minds of Malay nationalists before independence. After 1957, it moved its operation from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur.

In January 2003, it became a weekly and was distributed only in the Klang Valley following a sharp drop in readership.

Kumpulan Utusan management declined to comment on the closure when contacted.

The fate of 20-odd staff at the newspaper is also unknown.

A source said that some were likely to be absorbed into the group’s other publications while others may have to leave.

“They are still negotiating with the management about their future,” said the source.

Kumpulan Utusan is engaged in four major businesses - publishing, printing, advertising and multimedia.

The group has two key newspapers, Utusan Malaysia and Mingguan Malaysia, and four magazines - Mastika, Mangga, URTV and Wanita.

Or even the following news which is very saddening to my dearest pocket / wallet / bank account :

Veera: Don’t speculate about fuel prices

PETALING JAYA: The public should not speculate about fuel prices but wait for the government’s announcement, Deputy Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk S. Veerasingam said.

He said the ministry had set up a task force, chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister, to study the market situation on fuel.

“We have to wait for a decision from the committee and they have not met yet,” he told reporters after opening Amy Curry House here yesterday.

He also warned traders and restaurateurs against jumping the gun and raising the prices of goods.

He said a fair trade policy would soon be introduced to replace the Price Control Act 1946.

“We will hold roadshows throughout the country and introduce the policy to traders and businessmen.

Veerasingam also said the ministry conducted 260,038 raids and seized RM112,639 worth of goods since the end of last year.

He said the offences involved selling goods without price tags, trading without licence, failing to place trading licence in prominent spots and selling controlled-price items above the ceiling prices.

The following news brought no consolation whatsoever:

Bank gives staff option to leave

KUALA LUMPUR: The 12,000 workers of Bumiputra Commerce Bank (BCB) have been asked to decide if they want to stay with the company or opt for a Mutual Separation Scheme (MSS), which allows them to discontinue their service with the banking group.

And they have been given six months, from November last year, to make up their mind.

The MSS is unlike the more familiar Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS), when employees are given less than a month to decide whether to quit their service or stay on with their organisation.

BCB Communications vice-president Joyce Ha said the MSS was planned as a result of a reorganisation of the financial institution.

“We are refocusing our business strategies and with more IT applications the required staff strength is lesser.

“The clerical staff are being offered 1.75 parts of their monthly salary for every year served with the bank and others are being 1.25 for every year served,” she said.

CIMB-BCB Group CEO Datuk Nazir Abdul Razak said those who did not choose the MSS and decided to continue their service after the six-month amnesty would be assumed as being ready “to do battle with us.”

He said there would be a new management that would have a new business model and work culture.

“There is no target in terms of number of staff that we will have. But we expect a reasonable number to take up the MSS as the organisational changes have been extensive,” he said in an interview here.

“We have had this at CIMB (Commerce International Merchant Bankers Bhd) for some time and find it an effective way of maintaining staff quality and morale,” Nazir said.

Responding to the matter, National Union of Bank Employees secretary-general J. Solomon said the MSS was a fair scheme as employees were given half a year to decide.

“This is the first time an MSS is being offered in the banking sector.

“As a union, we do not encourage members to leave their organisation,” he said.   Last year, when Bumiputra Commerce Finance exercised its VSS, 48% of the 1,000 staff members took the option to leave but some were re-employed in BCB.

Yes indeed sirs, we are witnessing the signs of the times changing. Like the universe constantly expanding itself; uncurling itself from its spiral centre. The Jawi writing I must say is quite sentimental to the Malays and me personally. I learnt the basics of Fardhu ‘Ain while I was 10 in a JAIS sponsored school. And then some intermediate stuff whilst in secondary school.

Although I admit it that finding Utusan Melayu is quite challenging especially from originally being a daily, it was downgraded to being a weekly and lastly it was laid to rest to a not-to-distant archiving facility or your local garbage dump. I will follow-up this sub-topic later (much later I guess since my new workplace arbritarily categorized my blog as an ‘adult site’! Insult or an ego boost?).

Fuel prices, one thing about that phrase, it is usually followed with the words price and up. Hmm… here we go again on another price hike. I know it’s beyond our control particularly when there is a global demand from China for starters, and the topsy turvy international political scenario in the Middle East. To top it up, I read somewhere that the world’s oil reserves would last us for not more than 40 years I think. Oh boy!

Whilst you are down in the dumps, the third news sure hammers the last nail to your happy days coffin. With the stiff job market of today, we surely as heck dont need more unemployed people flooding it. Worse still, it’s the experienced bunch coming in to line up for jobs in addition to the freshly graduate crowds.

Yessirree, although I hate being a pessimist, years that lay ahead of today’s generation as well as the coming folks are not that bright. Well it probably wont be as gloomy as December (like the musim tengkujuh which for the record has became unpredictable) but may be a wee bit bleak for comfort.

I hope I am ready. I hope we all do. It wont be easy nevertheless not nearly as impossible as folding a map in one try. Even Superman with all his powers cant do that, so stop bragging! See ya in awhile peeps!
