And so it must…

Hello there sports fans!

I see another week has just whizzed by… pretty fast isn’t it? Knowing that we’re not getting any younger each day doesn’t seem to affect how we perceive time. In fact, thanks to our hectic lifestyle, we just want the week to be over and get to the good stuff : WEEKENDS!

During my childhood days, I always wondered why sometimes my dad was quite reluctant to take us on trips like to the beach or go on a picnic by the river. It only occur to me now that I’m working, weekends are the only time where YOU as a human being has some meaning on this plane called earth.

Otherwise you might be just another pencil pusher slash keyboard puncher slash wage slave with the rest of the world. I now envy the laughters and smiles coming from retirees. They look to me younger than I am FEELING. I guess the burden of work are finally lifted off these people I consider lucky and somehow their tired wings are now flapping tirelessly almost celebrating the freedom they so yearn.

So there was I spending my weekend last week with much joy especially after getting my supposedly working trip to another state that weekend cancelled by the higher up (ALRIGHT!!!). I watched some reruns from my favourite and (yes you guessed right…) much sentimental (to me) tv series Dr. House! I bought all the 4 seasons at RM5 per dvd.

All in all I spent 115 bucks and it was worth every cent spent! The pictures were clear and the sound was perfect. I like the old guy (Dr. Gregory House is played by Hugh Laurie); he’s funny, wacky, and most of the time miserable. I wish I had his rebellious nature against the normalities of life and stucked up people without giving a damn about what others WILL say.

House_pills

He’s a hero in my books. Establishments be damned! I began to watch and love the show during my UIA days. My office subscribed to Astro originally for… ummm not really sure what was the reason for the subscription since nobody really watch the channel. So each evening by 7 o’clock I had the office all to myself. Sometimes a colleague would stay back and slept over. AXN would air the show on Tuesday nights at around 9.30pm if I’m not mistaken.

So you see not only this show was and continues to be somewhat thought provoking whilst poking fun at normal people, it really remind me off those nights where an idiot box showing a person pretending to be untouchable or unfazed by the realities of life by masking it away with an aura of misery, can really be enjoyable. I could spent those nights with somebody whom I lost sometime early last year. Humph… sad stuff…

On another note, frankly I’ve lost my ability to write these days. The passion and the mood is not there. It is just like going to a place which hold so much memory but has already forgotten you. Not much there although you want it so. Hollow and cold to the touch. It’s there and yet its a blur to you. Just like a second helping of your favourite nasi ayam. Wont taste the same after gulping the plate the first time around. For you sentimental dolts, its just like first love isnt it. Nothing beats it. Never will.

I only get into the mood of writing if :-
i. I listen to some old songs; and
ii. I write something about the days of old.

Write up to the part before "he’s my hero" part, is just a bunch of English essay. Pretty lame and dull. After that, as I was lamenting the days of old wif an added twist of similarly old music, the flow of ideas (with the all too similar dashes of melancholy) came like the water flushing the toilet bowl. Great I need help!

Frozen and held down in the past;
As I lay down deep in the dust;
Hoping forever the memories will last;
Sadly all will perish and so it must.

The Past is Just a Mere Glance Away

June 18th, 2008 by eeqbalz

Hye guys…

Before I continue on wif my detailed adventure in my entry There & Back Again, I think I just wanna take a detour (especially since I really have to sit down & concentrate on dat piece) and just highlight a few things worth mentioning.

Just now I was searching some good free pop email accounts. Of course the best is gmail but I think the administrator here at my workplace has just too much time on his/her hands. Yes it’s blocked! So no IMAP or POP access to gmail here. Now before you ask if I dont already have a pop email account, I’ll say yes I do have one. Its not for me but for my staff since they dont have the official ones so I would like for them to have at least pop email access so messages to them would be almost instantenous.

So a-hunting I went for the best pop email on the net and saw AIM Mail being rated second best. As I registered an account to try it out, the screen name of my choosing was rejected & indicated it was already taken up (tuanwujian). Holy tolido! That’s simply outragous. Who in tarnation would copycat my unique screen name! Scratching my head, I just punched in tuanwujian with an old password I used to have during my students days and voila! I was logged in!

Hahaha silly me, I forgot AIM took over netscape.net (which incidently I registered for an email account way back in 1997). Suprisingly AIM still kept the tuanwujian screen name for me! Feeling all fuzzy and warm inside, my mind began to wander back (as usual) to the golden days of old. Yup, it was really a find this AIM Mail thingy.

Whilst I was wallowing in a trip down memory lane up in my skull, I saw a friendster.com message on my Yahoo! mail telling me that somebody left a comment on my page. So I fired up the browser and launched myself into cyberspace to see who chalked up a comment on my page. Hahaha lo and behold, another acquaintance from the past poke me again right here in the present.

It was another friend I got to know through Y!Messenger (geez my life is all about the internet isnt it) during my UIA working days. It seems she is still studying in UIA probably in her final year. I really have lost touch with pretty much everyone I knew those days thanks to my company’s IT administrators. Sheesh these people really have got to find themselves a pathetic excuse called hobby instead of bothering other people’s life.

Anyway the point is that the past isn’t actually that far. Sometimes it creeps up to you at times you least expected. A pleasant suprise indeed. It humbles one when thinking that life is like a spinning wheel. Depending on the size of your wheel, you find dat something from the past comes sometimes beckons you often or otherwise. What’s more if such memories brought forth is indeed sweet, you’ll find it difficult not to put on hold everything on your desk and just stare at the wall smiling evermore, whilst your mind floats to some corner of your heart where the past is still very much the present.

This is what happened to me tonite. A simple google search and a humble email are what started me smiling alone and sent me back to a time once so cheerish by yours truly. What wonders are the thing called internet. Indeed, it may not be healthy to linger in the past. Nevertheless such indulgences are what make life so much interesting. What so if the past is just a mere glance away!

There and Back Again - Part 1

Dear Friendster(s),

It has been such a ridiculously longish time since I’ve updated this blog of mine. This blog holds numerous memories I hold dear. The past 2 years of my life I guess was a terrific adventure and continues to be so. The ups & downs still faithfully colour my life.

Of course one of the main reasons for such ‘abstinence’ of updating the blog was that the IT admin EVERYWHERE I worked religiously blocked friendster (the word ‘work’ should gave the idea why it was blocked u nitwit eeqbal! - EPI Editor). Hence I gave up the idea of recording the paths I took in this journey called life & simply left it scattered over the years.

Indeed, when I read all those silly postings in this blog, I slowly realized that one’s life is such a colourful event which is usually spiced up with suprises nice & bad ones. One thing for sure, I really regret not recording events surrounding me & my frens on camera digital or otherwise. Worse for a year back such attempt was effectively made futile with the silly purchase of an awfully inadequate Benq digital camera.

Sigh, mistakes in one’s life is much more costlier when one began to think about it. The Benq camera although multi-functioned with its sound recording feature in addition to the usual picture & video capture features, is sadly disabled with its poor picture output. Pictures taken with it looks exactly like when you open your eyes right after waking up in the morning - its grainy and blurish a little. An average camera which reminds me of myself hehehe.

So whilst I finished up the never ending pile of paperwork, the inspiration to write again began to twitch in the nose as my dimly lit office was filled with some very sentimental musics in the background played on my pc. You may ask " pray do tell, what wouldst such sounds be that thee art most inclined not to let it passeth by as wouldst the wind bloweth away the odd grains of sands?"

It is a song sang by the late Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. He was a Hawaiian singer. Started to sing in a band in 1976, he became famous outside of Hawaii with his song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What A Wonderful World". It was one of the songs from his solo album "Facing The Future" released in 1993. Soon afterwards, he began promoting about freedom & Hawaiian independence in his songs. ‘Braddah Iz’ as he was fondly known was obese & was hospitalized several times before succumbing to weight related respiratory illness in June 26th 1997.

His sweet melodic voice carries out these words from my tiny speakers on my LCD monitor (which is not bad actually) while I write this piece of entry

"OK this one’s for Gabby
Ooooo oooooo ohoohohoo

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
And the dreams that you dreamed of
Once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow
Blue birds fly
And the dreams that you dreamed of
Dreams really do come true
Someday I’ll wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney tops thats where you’ll find me oh
Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
And the dream that you dare to,why, oh why can’t I?"

Yup, another song sentimental to myself to add to the already full 2GB Sansa mp3 player. Yes, 8 months back, it all began. A once in a lifetime adventure. Such was the journey extremely great, I for once couldnt put it down in writing. I think it would be in parts it seems. And for all I know, it’s going to be another enormous project for yours truly as huge as my flopped website project. I have some pictures & I need time to organise them so as to describe this exceptional journey.

And thus my trip back to memory lane begins now. I was there when it all happened. Now I am going back for a look what have I missed these couple of months. Hence and therefore, I present to you friendster "THERE AND BACK AGAIN". (Not coming to theaters near or far from you). The journey continues in the next posting.

Until then…

Hazy Ramadhan…

October 9th, 2006 by eeqbalz

Yes, yes I know… it’s almost… I dont know… longish is by far a modest estimate of how long I havent updated this bloggie of mine. In fact, I’m struggling right now with, yes you guessed it right the first hundredth time.. WORK COMMITMENTS.

But I dragged my feet to write something in English coz you see my English command as per oral is flundering and became from poor to pathetic. From the ocassional ‘umm’s and ‘ahh’s to complete silence for 3-4 seconds while I wreck my brains for the correct word. So you, although blogging has become quite a chore for me, it has come down to compulsory since I need to practice using it.

Ramadhan_001_p Ramadhan04

Anyway, Ramadhan has reached today the 16th day. That means we all have another 14 days before it draws its curtains down. Hmm… let’s see how much have I benefit from it… (pausing the most for 2 seconds) yup, sadly not much. That’s pretty lame but what can I say, I have work commitments that’s extremely tight for me to manouvere for some time off during the nights. But I’m not complaining though… since work is also amanah and I hope it’s counted as ibadah.

Right here in my office, I slave through the wee mornings in front of an Unca Dell (alright!) wif the usual feast of lagu raya in the background churning out from the pair of black harmon/kardon desktop speakers. Certainly not a bad setup! Especially after that 256 megs of RAM upgrade.

Buka puasa here is the normal fare for me. Ranging from wholemeal bread (I can’t find Gardenia nowadays - maybe coz of the preservative issue?) wif a mug of Alicafe Tongkat Ali. Sometimes it’s a can of sardine wif it. On days I have friends to buka puasa with, the local pasar Ramadhan right here serves a hearty selection of Malay specialities - my fav ikan talapia bakar yum yum!

Oh, dont get me wrong, I’m not on a budget, it’s just a hassle to go to the pasar ramadhan wif the frenzy of people gawking, hussling and buying food and drinks for berbuka. Since working here, I’m steadily losing appetite for makan2. Anything or nothing is just the same meal-wise.

Talk about buka puasa, look at the pics below… I wonder… (insaflah wahai eeqbalz!)

Ramadhanrelief1 Ramadhanrelief2 Ramadhanrelief4

I missed going to the mosque for tarawikh. Back when I was in Form 4 - 5 days, I would go to different mosques at home for tarawikh. There were the express ones (20 rakaat of tarawikh plus 3 rakaat of alamak I forgot what solat that is hehehe) which by 10.00 p.m. the imam would finish the tarawikh prayers to the more slower ones (10.30 p.m. wif only 8 rakaat).

Anyway, the haze has put it a different perspective of Ramadhan wif the occassional clear skies to hazy, lazy and cool days. I guess the Indonesians think if they can’t come to Malaysia physically, they’ll do it umm smokeyly? Their presence is surely felt right now eh? Talk about major smoke signal ala Red Indian style. Was the message? Let’s us stay in Malaysia? I don’t know… I dont speak Indon Smokian.

Haze2_1 Haze1

The ride to work this morning was very hazily (!) but it seems to clear up as I gander out yon horizon from my office windows. I bet Indonesian would be mad but some of them are troublemakers wherever they are; be it on our soil or back at their country! I guess you can’t really stop determined troublemakers.

Well, that’s my 2 bits worth of commentary hehehe… I hope I will be able write more in the future just to practice using English. Rusty huh? Now where’s that surgical mask of mine…

BUMI KITAKAH INI?

September 8th, 2006 by eeqbalz

Merdeka day has passed but Petronas TV ad was really something. Malaysia’s celebration of important days such as Merdeka and Hari Raya has since been spiced up with thought provoking messages from corporate giants such as Petronas that I look forward to it every year. And yes without fail, Petronas always has something memorable to present to the masses. CONGRATS!!!

p/s - cant wait for Ramadhan for another Petronas goodie… among other things of course!

BUMI KITAKAH INI

PASIR YANG MENGALIR DARI JARI JEMARIKU
JATUH BERDERAI MEMBENTUK BUMI
ADAKAH LAUTAN TANAH INI MILIKU?
MUNGKINKAH BUMI YANG BERJUTA ABAD
MILIK MANUSIA YANG UMURNYA SINGKAT?
SEKALIPUN BUMI INI MILIKKU,
KENAPAKAH APABILA AKU PERGI
AKAN KU TINGGALKAN JASADKU DI DALAMNYA?

BUMI KITAKAH INI?
SIAPAKAH PEMILIK SEBENARNYA?
OH TUHAN SERU SEKELIAN ALAM
BUMI MU TAKKAN JADI MILIKKU
HANYA BERIKANLAH AKU KESEMPATAN
MENEGUK DARI SUNGAI MU
MENYELAMI KESEPIAN LAUTAN
MENGAGUMI GEMURUH LANGITMU
MENGIKUTI GELAGAT HAMBAMU
DAN MENGINSAFI KEKUASAANMU

BERIKANLAH AKU KEBIJAKSANAAN UNTUK TIDAK HANYA MENERIMA TETAPI JUGA MEMBERI
USAHA DAN TITIK PELUHKU DENGAN KEIKHLASAN, RENDAH HATI DAN BELAS KASIHAN
AMANAH YANG KU WARISI DENGAN IKHLAS KU MANFAATKAN
SEMOGA SEMUA TERILHAM JUA
SEMOGA YANG LAIN AKAN BERTANYA
SOALAN YANG SAMA
MENCARI JAWAPAN YANG KIAN AMAT KETARA
BUMI KITAKAH INI?

Nicely done Petronas! See the TV ad online!

Merdeka and some more

August 30th, 2006 by eeqbalz

Selamat Menyambut Hari Kemerdekaan Ke-49 Malaysia!!!

I wanted to celebrate Merdeka at IIUM since they hold the university level Merdeka countdown annually, but since I have a ton of work to shove by Monday, I decided to celebrate it at the office in front of the tele with a couple of Malaysian flags in my hands. NICE!

It almost felt like Hari Raya, celebrating all by yourself. Hmm…

Anyway, after watching the live telecast of the Merdeka Countdown at Kuching, I went back to my pc (which is by the way is a Dell… way cool Unca Dell Jr.!) Somehow or rather, my head is playing the Seven Signs’ Sembilu Kasih (yes I know, the whole damn story is infamously known for its drabby and longish that will leave you with a "please-hit-me-with-a-flag-pole-on-head-before-I-die-of-boredom-and-utterly-unrealistic-plot" kinda feeling.

By honest to Grundo (whatever that is), I kinda like the theme song (which include the first Sembilu series) Sembilu Kasih by Seven Signs. Definitely I agree with you all that umm the band DO need more than fine tuning in terms of umm vocals but I guess I am a dead sucker to music with the 80’s flavour or in other words ROCK KAPAK. You gotta love it.

A quick Google search left me with a link to a myspace.com site of the band with a nifty link to an online player of the song. Even super cooler is a link to download it. Here you go… http://music.myspace.com/music/popup.cfm?num=0&time=48.91&fid=81221742&uid=1

I did also made a search for its lyrics but nadda… so here’s what my recently cleaned ears heard… any corrections please leave a message… thanksh and enjoy (hehehe…)

Internet Freedom - Let’s Be Responsible!

August 4th, 2006 by eeqbalz

Dear Friends,

The uncensored internet access in Malaysia is virtually guaranteed by the MSC charter. We Malaysians have practically unlimited and free internet access as per content.
However, irresponsible users (mostly those with agendas of foreign origin and backing as well as capitalists) are abusing this by putting up lies, posting sensitive contents and unvarified claims and statements.

Can you imagine where our access to internet will be constantly regulated and monitored (just like in China and Singapore) where most web content are barred and free access are given only to certain sites? Or even merely forwarding dubious content can get you hauled into jailed for 10 years minimum?

Let’s protect our right to free and uncensored web access by being RESPONSIBLE. Dont post, forward, publish, print, dessimate etc dubious, sensitive and other types of contents that are illegal. I surely dont want my net access blocked from even Yahoo! So please, LET’S CARE, LET’S SHARE.

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Prime Minister has issued a warning – those who spread untruths and slander on the Internet will face the law.

If information in blogs, websites and online portals were incorrect, bordered on slander, caused disturbance or compelled the public to lose faith in the nation’s economic policies, their authors would be detained for investigation, said Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

“We cannot allow such matters to flow through uncontrolled,” he told newsmen after attending a briefing on the proposed Islamic Civilisation Park in Pulau Wan Man here.

“They say all kinds of things, make all kinds of dubious claims. We cannot allow them to abuse the freedom earned under the media. If left alone, they can say or pass on all kinds of things.”

Abdullah also said that those who sent out such information via short message system (SMS) would also be held accountable.

“If they abuse the freedom – more than the present freedom given without any restriction – we cannot allow it,” he declared.

“Where in the world is there such a freedom, where one can freely spread incorrect information and slander without having to own up to it?”

Asked if he was calling for a control mechanism, Abdullah said he would leave it to the police to investigate first.

It was reported recently that the Internal Security Ministry was investigating several online sites following a string of misreporting that caused tension and confusion among Internet users.

Moving On… finally!

May 27th, 2006 by eeqbalz

Hye all,

Pretty longish since I updated this electronic-dust-collecting-past-time-hobby of a blog this…

You see, 2 weeks before was horrific… I was pushed to the wall with tight deadlines and all (the worst thing is I still didnt finish them yet). Then about a week ago, I got umm let’s say a promotion and went up the ladder albiet on contractual basis (still). So I haven’t the time to chat and stuff just trying to tie up things a little.

And on Thursday, I reported duty at my new place somewhere in near Putrajaya and Seri Kembangan. There isn’t any concrete work yet for us newbies (yet there are quite a few of us getting the call) since the place is particularly new. And MOST probably I wont be able to go online for I think, a month or two unless for weekends (I hope).

You see, I am handling some confidential stuff and although having an internet connection is as good as Ali Cafe’s Tongkat Ali in the morning but given the job description I have, it’s mighty risky… hackers, trojans and what nots. So there… hmmm I’m not sure in investing in a pc with an internet connection back at home is the way to go especially since I still dont have a tv(!)… talk about prehistoric huh?

I finally and quite officially am over with my old love-of-my-life-place IIUM once and for all. It seems that it’s a waste of time and energy just getting worked up with a place that didnt seem to want you back. Just the thought of going back and laze around during weekends at the place really get me going, but alas, I am in fact living in a fairy tale at the edge of reality.

I can go on and on WISHING I was there back again but as sucks as it is, I wont be seeing it for quite awhile. With work commitments mounting up, friends no longer available there, my vehicle sticker nearing it’s expiry and much, much more, I really dont have the luxury anymore to be there every now and then.

Life sure sucks but then again we are just passing by here and more often than not, you’ll get shoved over here and kicked over there. Not much of a choice but just continue on and threading ahead. Whilst I cheerished living in the past as far as IIUM is concerned, a lot has changed around us that I am left quite behind in many aspects.

It hasn’t been easy nor it ever will be, but moving on we must!

Melancholic Time

May 7th, 2006 by eeqbalz

Good day,

Umm… okies it’s one of those melancholic times for me yet again! And yes it has everything to do with UIAM. I sure wish I could forget the place easily as it is forgetting me. Yup, I lost my wallet there soon 2 months back.

My old stuff (I told my ex-boss about putting it awhile in the hostel and he okayed it but not for the some monkeys working there) were thrown out of the old room I used to crash in. Like anyone is going to use it since it had a major electrical connection failure in there.

I fall down the stairs from the parking lot to the hostel (can you believe it I have been walking there day and night for the last 10 years and never fall down there?) and I got a sore ankle. The old office at STADD seems to be more eerie than I remembered.

I guess the ghosts over there (yes indeed, there some!) dont remember me anymore especially when I actually saw somebody’s head looking at my back from the reflection of the PC I was using at 3 a.m. My ex-boss and close friend has retired from service officially on Saturday. It’s funny but we went into UIAM Gombak about the same time (1998) and left it also almost at the same time.

Hmmm… and the latest I heard from the grapevine is that one of the student services UIAM is providing will be corporatised soon, I’m betting like in June this year. Oh boy! Lots of changes I see. But the feeling I have for it continues to be the same. So what to do? Hmmm… I was bumped so I decided to start collecting UIAM’s old logos (its designs I meant as the actual logo hasn’t changed).

I ran a search using old google and yeah, I got it!

Logo1_1   This is a modified version by somebody I dont know!

Logo2 This is the original version since 1998 (as far as I knew)

Iium20logo This is the current UIAM logo.

I just wanted to document these logos before it is blown away with time and everybody forgets about it. Oh, when I am in a melanchonic mood, a background music usually hits it home. So as I am writing this whatever stuff, Hillary Duff is singing ‘So Yesterday’ as I wonder who is singing this to whom? UIAM to me or vice versa (since I still remember it most fondly)?

You can change your life - if you wanna
You can change your clothes - if you wanna
If you change your mind
Well, that’s the way it goes

But I’m gonna keep your jeans
And your old black hat - cause I wanna
They look good on me
You’re never gonna get them back

At least not today, not today, not today
’cause

[Chorus:]
If it’s over, let it go and
Come tomorrow it will seem
So yesterday, so yesterday
I’m just a bird that’s already flown away

Laugh it off let it go and
When you wake up it will seem
So yesterday, so yesterday
Haven’t you heard that I’m gonna be okay

You can say you’re bored - if you wanna
You can act real tough - if you wanna
You can say you’re torn
But I’ve heard enough

Thank you… you made my mind up for me
When you started to ignore me
Do you see a single tear
It isn’t gonna happen here
At least not today, not today, not today
’cause

[Chorus]

If you’re over me, I’m already over you
If it’s all been done, what is left to do
How can you hang up if the line is dead
If you wanna walk, I’m a step ahead
If you’re moving on, I’m already gone
If the light is off then it isn’t on
At least not today, not today, not today
’cause

[Chorus 2X]
